Overview

The Babai River Golden Mahseer Angling Expedition – 20 Days is an elite, highly restricted angling itinerary designed for hardcore sport fishermen who wish to challenge the "Tiger of the Ganges"—the legendary Himalayan Golden Mahseer (Tor putitora). Flowing through the strictly protected, untamed core of Bardia National Park in Western Nepal, the Babai River offers an unmatched world-class freshwater fishery.

Because the Babai Valley was closed to outsiders for decades and remains tightly regulated by the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation (DNPWC), its waters hold massive, untouched populations of Golden Mahseer, ferocious Goonch Catfish (Bagarius yarrelli), and native Snow Trout (Schizothorax species).

This raft-assisted, drift-fishing expedition moves systematically from the fast-flowing upper reaches near Chepang, down through deep, emerald-green canyon pools, and into the wide alluvial floodplains of the lower Babai Valley. Accompanied by expert river guides and a fully equipped camping crew, you will spend your days stalking spooky fish in crystal-clear waters and your nights camped on pristine, starry river beaches. The expedition concludes with an exclusive deep-jungle safari in Bardia National Park, offering unmatched opportunities to witness wild Bengal tigers, greater one-horned rhinoceroses, and wild Asiatic elephants in their natural habitat.

Important Note

Catch and Release Policy: To protect the delicate aquatic ecosystem of Bardia National Park and ensure the preservation of this endangered species, strict catch-and-release rules apply to all Golden Mahseer and Goonch Catfish. Fish must be handled with wet hands, kept in the water whenever possible, and safely released after quick photography.

Angling Style: Both lure spinning and fly fishing are highly successful on the Babai. Barbless single hooks are mandatory on all lures and flies. Never drag a fish onto hot dry sand or rocks, which destroys their protective slime coat.

Need To Know

Legal & Safety Mandates

  • Ranger Escort is Mandatory: Because the Babai River flows entirely within the strictly protected, high-security core zone of Bardia National Park (home to dense populations of wild tigers, elephants, and rhinos), solo entry or solo fishing is strictly illegal. The park authorities require every angling group to be accompanied by an official, armed National Park Ranger alongside your licensed fishing guide at all times.
  • Permit Procurement Timeline: Special Babai Valley access permits and angling licenses must be processed directly through the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation (DNPWC). This requires a valid passport copy, a current tourist visa, and two passport photos provided well in advance.
  • Strict Curfew Rules: Under national park regulations, no human movement or angling activity is permitted within the park boundaries between sunset and sunrise. All anglers must return to the designated campsite before dark.

Strict Catch & Release Regulations

Zero Harvest Policy: The Himalayan Golden Mahseer is a vulnerable species protected under Nepal's conservation laws. All fishing on this itinerary operates under a mandatory, strict 100% catch-and-release policy.

Mandated Fish Handling Protocol

  • Barbless Hooks Only: To minimize mouth trauma, all lures, spinners, spoons, and flies must use single, barbless hooks (or standard hooks with the barbs crushed completely flat). Treble hooks are strictly prohibited in this zone.
  • Submerged Handling: Fish must be handled exclusively with wet hands and kept submerged in the shallow water during unhooking.
  • No Hot Sand/Rocks: Dragging a fish onto dry, hot sand or river boulders is strictly forbidden, as it destroys their protective slime coat and causes fatal infections.
  • Knotless Nets: If a landing net is used, it must feature a knotless, rubberized mesh design.

Environmental & Packing Realities

  • Zero Footprint Camping: The Babai Valley is a pristine ecosystem. All non-biodegradable waste (including depleted batteries, plastic bottles, packaging, and damaged fishing line) must be packed out entirely by the raft crew.
  • Complete Power Disconnect: There is zero cellular network signal or electricity for the entire 16-day stretch on the river. Anglers must bring high-capacity, waterproof power banks or portable solar chargers to maintain camera and headlamp batteries.
  • Personal Tackle Self-Sufficiency: Local shops in Nepalgunj or Thakurdwara do not stock specialized Mahseer tackle or fly-fishing gear. You must arrive fully prepared with all personal rods, reels, heavy fluorocarbon shock leaders, and backup lures/flies.

  • All airport/hotel/river transfers via private, air-conditioned 4x4 Jeeps.
